Mohali: An analysis of road accident data from 2022 to 2024 by the Punjab Road Safety and Traffic Research Centre (PRSTRC) has identified Derabassi and Kharar as the most fatal zones in Mohali district. Over the three-year period, Derabassi recorded 97 deaths, followed by Kharar with 72 fatalities.Airport Road also emerged as a high-risk stretch, reporting 52 fatalities across various black spots, including 15 deaths under the Phase-1 police station alone. The study identified 93 accident black spots across Mohali. As per the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH), a black spot is a 500-metre stretch or junction where either five accidents causing fatalities or grievous injuries, or 10 fatalities, occurred within three years.Mohali deputy commissioner Komal Mittal said the identified stretches will be reviewed in detail. “Corrective and preventive measures will be initiated at the earliest to reduce road accidents and enhance overall safety. A review meeting will be held next week to finalise an action plan,” she said. While Mohali city, Zirakpur and Mullanpur also reported fatal crashes, the numbers were significantly lower than Derabassi, Kharar and Airport Road, highlighting the need for focused intervention in these high-risk zones.
