6 months after grand launch, ‘state-of-the-art’ Chandigarh govt trauma centre ceiling collapses due to rain; injures visitor | Chandigarh News
CHANDIGARH: Less than 6 months after its high-profile inauguration, the “state-of-the-art” Trauma Centre at Govt Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, came under fire following a dangerous structural failure. On Friday morning, when the city witnessed intense rainfall, the false ceiling at the main entrance collapsed abruptly, leaving one person injured and sparking outrage over the quality of construction. The incident occurred at the main gate, a high-traffic zone that operates 24/7. At the time of the collapse, the area was crowded with patients, their relatives, and security personnel. One individual sustained injuries and required immediate medical intervention. Eyewitnesses noted that if the ceiling fell just seconds earlier or later, the casualty count could have been catastrophic. The collapse raised serious allegations against the GMCH-32 administration and the UT engineering department. The facility was inaugurated on August 9, 2025, by Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, and was intended to be a premier emergency hub for the tricity area. This was not the first red flag. Since its opening, the centre was plagued by delays in staff deployment and a shortage of essential medical equipment, causing consistent distress to patients.
