HC asks Punjab DGP for details of all shootings in state since 2023

Chandigarh: Punjab and Haryana HC has directed Punjab DGP to file a specific affidavit setting out the details of shooting incidents in state since 2023, with a focus on those captured on CCTV/mobile phone cameras.The affidavit shall also set out whether the shooters had been arrested and what was done to nab the fugitives. HC passed these orders Wednesday while hearing a PIL on a kabaddi player’s murder. The bench is also hearing similar matters related to telecast of the interview of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi in a Punjab jail.

Mentioning several instances where extortion calls were made and likelihood that ‘protection’/ransom money had been paid, HC also asked the DGP to furnish details of extortion money recovered, including the money trail and related investments.HC has ordered installation of CCTV cameras in sensitive places in urban areas of Punjab. State advocate general assured HC there would be no dearth of funds for this.“DGP, Punjab, shall also identify the websites and social media platforms where videos and posts that tend to glorify crime and criminals are being shared and take immediate steps to remove the same forthwith. He shall ensure an adequate number of policemen are deployed for patrolling in urban areas,” HC said in its detailed order, released Thursday. The next hearing is on Feb 5.DGP Gaurav Yadav was in court for Wednesday’s hearing. He submitted that Punjab Police had taken several steps to prevent and detect organised crime, including targeted killings and extortion. Several shooters have been identified and brought to book, he added.
