IG Sukhchain Singh Gill is the new Punjab intel chief

Chandigarh: In a reshuffle of eight IPS officers, Punjab govt on Tuesday appointed 2003-batch IPS officer inspector general Sukhchain Singh Gill as the new chief of the intelligence wing of Punjab Police.Gill replaces 1994-batch IPS officer P K Sinha, a DGP-rank officer, as Punjab intel chief. Sinha, who held dual charge as special DGP (intelligence) and vigilance bureau chief director, will remain posted as VB chief director. Gill is among doctors-turned-IPS officers serving in Punjab. He completed his MBBS from Govt Medical College before making it to the IPS after clearing the UPSC exam on his 2nd attempt in 2002.

Gill was posted as IG (headquarters) in April 2022 and continued in the post since. He has also served as Amritsar commissioner of police (Sept 2019-Aug 2021), Ludhiana (April 2018-Sept 2019), and Jalandhar (Aug-Sept 2021). He also served as DIG Ferozepur range (Dec 2016-April 2017) and Patiala range (April 2017-2018). Gill served as SSP of Hoshiarpur (Feb 2008-2009 and Oct 2012-Nov 2013), Ludhiana city when it was not a commissionerate (Feb 2009-2010), and Bathinda (Feb 2010-Oct 2012). Gill also served as Chandigarh SSP on deputation (Dec 2013-2016). Gill is a recipient of the police medal for meritorious service (2022), DGP honour for exemplary sewa to society, and DGP commendation discs on 9 occasions. As IG headquarters, he was the point person who held a series of press conferences, especially when radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh (who later went on to get elected as Khadoor Sahib MP) was on the run and was eventually arrested, and when Punjab launched its war on drugs. Meanwhile, 1994-batch IPS officer S S Srivastava, who was serving as special DGP (security), was posted as special DGP (headquarters). Kaustubh Sharma was posted as ADGP (security). Nearly 10 days ago, Sharma was posted ADGP (human rights) following his promotion as ADGP from IG rank. Another 1994-batch IPS officer, Naresh Arora, was posted back as special DGP (human rights), from where he was shifted and posted as special DGP, Punjab State Human Rights Commission, recently. He will now hold the additional charge as special DGP, Punjab State Human Rights Commission, as well. Maninder Singh, who was recently posted as Ropar SSP after revocation of his suspension, has been given additional charge as assistant inspector general (welfare). Border range DIG Sandeep Goel was given additional charge as DIG (anti-gangster task force-II), Ludhiana. Kanwaldeep Singh, who was serving as AIG (crime), was posted as AIG (personnel-I).
