TARN TARAN: A 35-year-old man was shot dead allegedly by a rival following an old enmity late Friday night, the accused fleeing the scene, police said.The deceased, Navpreet Singh Navi, was shot after a confrontation with Surinder Singh alias Sonu Kanda, Superintendent of Police (Detective) Riputapan Singh said on Saturday.According to the SP (D), the two men had a heated exchange before Surinder allegedly opened fire with his rifle, hitting Navpreet. He was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead.Navpreet was the husband of Shiromani Akali Dal sarpanch of Gaggobua village, Kulwinder Kaur.SP Riputapan Singh said the preliminary investigation indicated that the incident stemmed from an old rivalry between the two men. Police were in the process of registering an FIR and had begun investigations to establish the exact sequence of events leading to the shooting.The accused, Surinder Singh, allegedly fled after the firing and remained absconding. Police teams were conducting searches to trace and arrest him.The body was taken into police custody and sent for postmortem examination.Police teams were examining the crime scene and collecting evidence, including details about the weapon used in the shooting. Investigators were questioning people who may have witnessed the confrontation or had information about the rivalry between the two men, a police source said.The killing caused tension in the village, following which police stepped up security in the area to prevent any further confrontation.SP Riputapan Singh said efforts were underway to arrest the accused and that further details would emerge as the investigation progressed.
