Chandigarh: The UT education dept has proposed that summer vacation in govt and government-aided schools across the Union Territory will be observed from May 23 to June 30, as per minutes of a departmental committee meeting.The schedule, finalised after meetings held in January and March, sets the summer break at 39 days. However, June 29 and 30 have been designated as working days for teachers.The proposal is part of a broader holiday calendar recommended for all govt model, non-model and aided schools for the academic year 2026. Officials stated that the committee reviewed both the Chandigarh Administration’s declared holiday list for 2026 and the previous year’s approved schedule before finalising the dates.Apart from the summer break, the calendar includes a five-day autumn break from Nov 7 to Nov 11, and a 13-day winter break from Jan 1 to Jan 13, 2027.Two local holidays — Aug 28 for Raksha Bandhan and Oct 29 for Karva Chauth — have also been proposed, along with one additional holiday to be decided at the discretion of the school principal. The minutes further note that second Saturdays will continue to be observed as holidays in all govt and aided schools in Chandigarh.The recommendations are subject to formal approval by the competent authority.
